Ibogaine is a nootropic plant-based medicine that is highly effective in helping the mind and body to make deep, lasting shifts in thinking and behavior. Ibogaine is most active alkaloid found most abundantly in the second layer of the root bark of tabernanthe iboga, a perennial shrub native to West Africa. It can also be found in a number of other tropical plant species in South America, Australia, etc.

Benefits of Working with Ibogaine

It’s effects are complex, and it’s exact mechanisms of action are unknown ((Mechanisms of antiaddictive actions of ibogaine, Glick S, Maisonneuve. )). However, ibogaine has been clearly shown to rebalance the brain’s neurotransmitters ((Characterization of multiple sites of action of ibogaine, Sershen H, et al. – full text)) in multiple ways, regulating mood and giving the brain a chance to stabilize behaviors and thought patters that it normally uses to stimulate it’s neurotransmitter production.

It has a heavy affect on cellular metabolism ((Metabolic plasticity and the energy economizing effect of ibogaine, the principal alkaloid of Tabernanthe iboga. Paskulin, Roman, et al. Journal of Ethnopharmacology. December 2011.)), and post treatment, the body is physically revitalized and rejuvenated.

In addition, ibogaine releases a protein called GDNF ((G.D.N.F Mediates the Desirable Actions of the Anti-Addiction Drug Ibogaine against Alcohol Consumption, Dao-Yao He, et al.)). This helps the brain to strengthen and create new neuron connections, providing what has been referred to as a neurological second childhood. Psychologists refer to this as neuroplasticity, a time when the mind is easily able to ingrain new choices and behaviors.

Oneirogenic Effects

In large or compound doses ibogaine can also have an oneirogenic, or waking dream effect.

Depending on the individual, this experience has be noted as anything from a mild shift in awareness and physical sensation to a pronounced consciousness shifting episode. The latter is often accompanied by visualizations that seem to bring forward subconscious material with the same logic and fluctuation as dreams.

At Pangea we introduce ibogaine slowly and utilize this whole spectrum of effects in the way that is most beneficial for each individual. Our primary focus is on maximizing the benefits related to your treatment goals in a safe and comfortable manner.

Types: Iboga and Ibogaine

We use 3 forms of ibogaine in our work: iboga rootbark powder, total spectrum alkaloid extract, and purified ibogaine hydrochloride.

The rootbark powder is ground bark from the second layer of root of the Tabernanthe Iboga plant. Iboga root bark comes in the form of a fine, very bitter, powder. It can be eaten or taken in capsules, which some people prefer. We find working with the whole root to be the safest, most gentle and balanced way to work with iboga. This plays a large role in our low dose protocol.

Twelve alkaloids have been identified in iboga root bark. The Total Alkaloid extract has all of the active alkaloids in their natural ratios, minus the excess inactive plant material, which allows for more concentrated dosing.

Ibogaine Hydrochloride is a potent purified extract. Usually 95% or higher, this form of Ibogaine does not have the other alkaloids that occur naturally with it in the plant form. Ibogaine hydrochloride is a powerful anti-addictive drug, which can interrupt and even diminish active opiate withdrawal syptoms.

We like to introduce Ibogaine gently through the root bark first, so clients can start to feel comfortable and begin to navigate the experience of Iboga. We then increase the dosages with total alkaloid extract and gradually introduce purified ibogaine.

Along with the benefits of chemical dependency interruption, ibogaine tends to lower ones heart rate and decrease blood pressure. This can be dangerous if someone has a preexisting cardiovascular and or pulmonary condition. Ibogaine can exacerbate these condition, which is why it is so important to be thoroughly screened and stabilized for treatment.

We have found that certain clients with cardiac conditions can not receive hydrocholoride, but were able to accomplish their work with us using the rootbark and total alkaloid extract. For high risk clients, we encourage a longer term stay, where we can move more slowly and build up the alkaloids in the system over time, with days of rest in between dosing.

We require a series of medical tests before we can make any clear recommendations.
